SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — A former New York City Fire Department apparatus has come to Sunrise Beach. Rescue 4, one of the five heavy rescue trucks that responded to the World Trade Center attack on 9/11 will be housed at the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District (SBFPD) through the month of October.
Rescue 4 and her sister rig Rescue 5 are now owned by a non–profit organization, The Remembrance Rescue Project. The rigs are in the process of making their way across the country to bring about awareness and remembrance of the sacrifices that were made on that tragic day.
According to a director from the Remembrance Rescue Project, the organization receives almost all of its funding through t-shirt sales, and there is no fee for fire districts or other organizations who take charge of the trucks. Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District will only be responsible for fueling the truck as the district takes it to various locations and events.
“It is a great honor for our organization to be entrusted with such a significant piece of history,” SBFPD Fire Chief Dennis Reilly said. “We hope to be able to share this with our community and the region.”
Rescue 4 will be on display from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the SBFPD headquarters building located at 30 Porter Mill Spring Road. In addition the public may view the apparatus at SBFPD Station 2 located on State Highway TT, anytime the firefighters are in quarters.
The district will also consider requests for local civic and non–profits groups to display the apparatus. Anyone interested in discussing this should contact Chief Reilly at 573-374-4411.
