FAIRVIEW BEACH, Va. — Two men who posted one of the fastest speeds at this year’s Lake of the Ozarks Shootout were killed on Saturday during a boat race on the Potomac River.

Garth Tagge and Jim Melley’s white 2002 36-foot Skater went airborne during the Potomac River Radar Run, according to Speedboat Magazine, after posting a speed of 170 earlier in the day. The boat reportedly flipped multiple times, ejecting Tagge and Melley from the cockpit.

At the 2016 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, Tagge and Melley hit a dizzying 194 mph, clinching the “Top Cat - Non-Professional” award for the race.
