SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — 'Chimp Crazy' star and local zoo owner Tonia Haddix is set to lose her animal welfare license April 22 unless she appeals a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture order.
The USDA order would not only ban Haddix from legally selling USDA-regulated animals, including primates, but operating the Sunrise Beach Safari at the intersection of Route TT and MM as well.
"Tonia Haddix locked a highly social chimpanzee inside a tiny cage in her basement and repeatedly lied under oath to keep him in her clutches," said PETA Foundation General Counsel Brittany Peet in a press release. "The USDA did the right thing to stop Haddix from hurting more animals, and PETA will ensure she stays on the right side of the law or else face the consequences."
If an appeal is not filed, she cannot have an Animal Welfare Act license to exhibit and sell animals for two years.
LakeExpo reached out to Haddix, who declined to comment.
