Two people drowned in Missouri waterways last weekend, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Patrol says the drownings took place on Lake Taneycomo and the Meramec River, at almost the exact same time. Matthew Lawless, 55, of Florissant, Mo. was rafting in the Meramec River at around 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 when he fell overboard. Lawless was not wearing a lifejacket, authorities say, and he went underwater, resurfaced, went back under and did not resurface again. His body was recovered on Sunday morning and pronounced dead by the Crawford County Coroner.

At 5:27 p.m. on Saturday, authorities say 97-year-old Clarence Leohr, of Clay City, Ind., was found in Lake Taneycomo at a resort north of Branson. He was transported to Cox Hospital in Branson, and was pronounced dead there at 9:37 p.m. Authorities categorized the death as a drowning; it was not reported whether Leohr had any medical issues that may have caused him to fall into the water.
