DALLAS COUNTY, Mo. — A Lebanon, Mo. man drowned on the Niangua River last weekend, after he rescued two children from the river.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 57-year-old Jake Stephen was at the Niangua River around the Barry Bluff Access, the evening of Saturday, Aug. 10. Just before 5 p.m., two children were struggling in the water, according to the report, and Stephen entered the water to help them. The two children were able to return to the shore safely, the Patrol says, but Stephen went underwater, did not resurface, and drowned.
His body was recovered and he was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. The body was taken to Shadel Funeral Home.
