CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo. — Following the weekend's crazy storm that knocked out power across the Lake, a generator sparked a garage fire Monday morning in Sunrise Beach, destroying everything inside.Â
At 7:56 a.m. on July 6, Camden County 911 dispatched the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District to a reported working garage fire on Michael's Cove Road. All occupants had safely exited the residence before firefighters arrived.
Squad 12 reached the scene within five minutes and deployed two attack lines. Firefighters gained access by cutting through the garage door, and the fire was brought under control by 8:16 a.m.
While the garage structure remained intact, all of its contents were considered a total loss. An investigation by the fire marshal determined the blaze was accidental and originated from a generator running inside the garage.
There were no reported injuries.
If you're using a generator due to recent power outages, the Sunrise Beach FPD recommends:
- operating generators at least 10 feet from an structureÂ
- avoiding overloading generators or electrical cords
- having a working carbon monoxide detector in the home, as outside air and emissions can enter an occupied space
- keeping the number of devices plugged into a generator to a minimumÂ
Sunrise Beach FPD responded with two engines, three tankers, a ladder truck, and two chief officers. Gravois and Mid County FPDs also assisted at the scene. All units returned to service by 9:27 a.m.
