CAMDENTON, Mo. — The man who allegedly brandished a firearm at Gerbes Supermarket and stole hundreds of prescription pills was still in critical condition at University Hospital, in Columbia, after authorities say he shot himself. The man has been identified as 28-year-old Clayton G. Phillips.
Camdenton Police say Phillips shot himself in the head after barricading himself inside a residence on Upper Prairie Hollow Road in Macks Creek on Monday night. According to police, information from the community led officers to Phillips; they obtained a warrant and, with assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol SWAT Team, served it on Monday evening. Phillips reportedly barricaded himself in the residence and shortly afterward, police say they heard a shot. When they went inside, authorities found Phillips seriously injured with a gunshot wound to the head, and no one else in the house.
On Tuesday evening, police said he was in critical condition at University Hospital. Camdenton Police Department’s press release also added, “We would ask the public’s understanding in this situation. This appears to be yet another tragic event in the opioid crisis. Regardless of his actions our compassion goes out [to] the family in this difficult time.”
