LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — Bikefest brought more than 100,000 motorcyclists to cruise Lake of the Ozarks over the weekend, according to estimates from the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau, and while the vast majority made it to the Lake and back home safely, the Missouri State Highaway Patrol reports there were several accidents involving motorcycles during the weekend.
According to the Patrol, the following incidents occurred:
-40-year-old Juan Marquez, of Cuba, Mo., was seriously injured in a crash on Highway 42, Friday afternoon. The Patrol says Marquez was driving a 1996 Harley Davidson westbound on Highway 42 when he swerved to avoid a pedestrian in the road, lost control, and the vehicle overturned. Marquez was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, the Patrol says. He sustained serious injuries and was flown to University Hospital for treatment.
-44-year-old Michelle Hammer, of Villa Ridge, Mo., was hospitalized after a crash on Route W, Saturday evening. The Patrol says Hammer was riding on a 2016 Harley Davidson with 44-year-old William Hammer driving. He failed to negotiate a curve, the Patrol says, and the motorcycle went off the right side of the road, where both were thrown from it. Neither passenger was wearing a helmet, the Patrol says, and Michelle Hammer sustained moderate injuries. She was taken by EMS to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment.
-55-year-old Dana Thorsen, of Knob Noster, Mo., was injured when she attempted to avoid a collision with another vehicle on Horseshoe Bend Parkway near Bagnell Dam Boulevard, the Patrol reported. The incident occurred on Saturday night. Thorsen’s 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan overturned, and Thorsen, who the Patrol says was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries. She was taken to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment.
-55-year-old Cynthia Weishaupt, of Bunker Hill, Ill., was injured when her 2003 Harley Davidson went off the right side of southbound Missouri Highway 7 and hit a sign, on Sunday afternoon, the Patrol reported. Weishaupt was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the Patrol reported. She was flown to University Hospital for treatment.
-57-year-old Bret Moore, of Camdenton, was injured when he encountered stopped traffic along Missouri Highway 7 and lost control of his 2003 Harley Davidson V-Rod, on Sunday afternoon. The motorcycle overturned and he was thrown from it. Moore was wearing a helmet, the Patrol says. He sustained serious injuries and was flown to University Hospital for treatment.
