Editor's Note: The following two letters to the editor were sent to Lake Expo, expressing support for the planned Osage Nation casino at Lake of the Ozarks. Our coverage of the announcements for the planned casino can be found after both letters.
Dan Gier, former Miller County Presiding Commissioner:
As a sixth generation Miller County family and former Presiding Commissioner, I know economic development projects like this. They are extremely difficult to attract and don’t often come to us. If they do, they request major tax breaks and public financing (bonding) are required, placing major risk on the local level.
The Osage Nation is building a world-class entertainment center featuring a casino and much more here at the Lake. Make no mistake, this is an economic win for the area. They have asked for no funding or major tax breaks from the local community, only to share as partners in its success.
I have already been impressed with their dedication to our community and this project as well as the operations of their existing properties. Since the announcement of this project, the Osage Nation has already supported various community and charitable efforts including Kids’ Harbor and Citizens Against Domestic Violence. There is much more to come not only in the name of charity but in the name of employment and overall success to all of the Lake Community.
This development is great news for the Lake of the Ozarks, area businesses and workers. We should be working as partners with the Osage Nation to make this venture a success.
Mike Neal, President & CEO of Tulsa Regional Chamber of Commerce:
Local governments are constantly seeking new economic development opportunities to create growth in their communities.
As president of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, I can personally attest to the citizens, business leaders and community leaders in the Lake of the Ozarks region that the Osage Nation is a great partner that has kept its promises to our communities.
Osage Casinos has been a strong community partner since locating here in 2007. For over 15 years, this relationship has only grown with the opening of its new $160 million casino in our region.
Providing competitive entertainment options is a key economic driver for the Tulsa region, and Osage Casinos continues to be a draw for concerts, gaming and weekend getaways that have boosted revenue for our region. Not only do their businesses generate growth for Tulsa, but their generous support of non-profit organizations has helped improve our community. When Osage Casinos succeed, the community sees the benefits of the Nation's success.Â
The Lake of the Ozarks should expect a similar relationship with the Osage Nation. From our earliest discussions with the Nation, they committed to being a strong community partner and they continue to be a great partner for Tulsa. By raising the bar on entertainment for our region, they have served as a catalyst for additional adjacent tourism options that further drive economic development. Leaders at the Lake of the Ozarks should welcome this new opportunity and welcome the Osage Nation. The Nation exceeded its promises to our area, and you can expect the same positive relationship in Missouri.
