When "slow" is 189 miles per hour, you know you're at a fast boat race.
American Ethanol, the three-time defending Shootout Top Gun speed champion posted a big speed in their first run on Saturday, but boat owner Don Onken says the next run will be better.
Driven by John Cosker and Tony Battiato, American Ethanol hit 189 mph during its run around 11 a.m. But the Mystic catamaran packing 9,000 horsepower can do so much more. It ran 204 mph in 2017 and 217 mph in 2016.
The reason for the “slower” run on Saturday morning was twofold, Onken told LakeExpo.com:
- They “spun a prop” at the start line, which means one of the propellers ran too hard too fast and lost its “grip” in the water.
- Someone forgot to latch the upper hatch, which started trying to blow open midway down the course.
Onken said the boat would return for a cleaner run later in the day.
