The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, now in its 33rd year, is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the Midwest, drawing go-fast boaters and a famously long flotilla for two days of high-speed fun. In late-2020, after a record-setting fundraising year, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Board of Directors named Todd Nicklas as the new Executive Director.
The races themselves take place at Captain Ron’s Bar & Grill on Lake of the Ozarks every year in August. However, family friendly events all over the Lake of the Ozarks lead up to the big weekend, when some the nation’s largest, fastest speed boats compete for the annual “Top Gun” award, given to the fastest overall boat of the weekend.
But the best thing is, the 501(c)(3) event gives 100% of proceeds to local charities and fire departments around Lake of the Ozarks. Over the years, the Shootout has raised millions of dollars, including a record-setting $400,000 in 2020. To get a sneak-peak of what to expect at the Shootout, check out the official recap video from 2020:
This year's event will be the first time in 2 years the Shootout has had an official “Executive Director” after the role was served by Shootout President Ron Duggan in 2020. “We were so fortunate with what we were able to accomplish in 2020 in giving back over $400,000 to our local charities and fire departments,” Duggan said. He added, “Although myself along with the board did handle those responsibilities last year, we have big aspirations for the Shootout moving forward and felt this was a position we needed to add if we are going to accomplish our fundraising goals moving forward. We are very excited to announce Todd Nicklas as our new Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Executive Director.”
As for Nicklas, he is excited about the new opportunity. “I have always loved the Shootout and what it means for this community. It’s an honor to be able to work with this event and all of these incredible volunteers, sponsors, and members of the racing industry on behalf of our Lake of the Ozarks community,” Nicklas stated.
Nicklas is a long-time PGA golf professional, educator, mentor, coach, and brings customer relations, sales, and marketing experience from his days as a project manager for a major roofing company. Nicklas currently owns and operates “We Got This LOZ,” a handy-man business servicing the Lake Area. Nicklas and his wife Jo Beth, who is an educator with the Camdenton School District, have 2 children and reside in Camdenton, Missouri. His wide resume includes a Masters in Math Education from the University of Missouri, organizing major events, and working with at-risk youth.
According to Duggan, Nicklas will focus on building relationships and learning the day-to-day of the event. Of course, he will also be preparing for the 33rd annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, set for Aug. 28–29, 2021. The many pre-Shootout events kick off with the Mini Shootout Meet & Greet at Bridal Cave on Friday, Aug. 20.
