LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — The evening of July 10, 2019, a boat caught fire while docked at Village Marina, around the Lake of the Ozarks 3 Mile Marker.

The fire quickly spread to two other boats and the surrounding dock. By the time firefighters had the blaze under control, two boats were totaled, a third was seriously damaged, and the dock had significant damage too.

A month later, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety says they’re unable to determine exactly what caused the blaze. "The Division of Fire Safety investigation determined only that fire originated in one of the unoccupied vessels. It was not able to determine the cause of the fire," a spokesperson for the state Department of Public Safety said.

Losing precious dock space to fire damage in the heat of the summer boating season is difficult for a Lake of the Ozarks marina, in a business where you have to make hay while the sun shines. Village Marina owner Mark Brick said the dock damage was extensive, too. Brick said he plans to fully restore the damaged dock. As of Aug. 12, the estimated damage from the fire totaled $935,000.
